Au passage d'un siècle à l'autre, Aristide Maillol simplifiait les lignes sensuelles de ses sculptures monumentales, dans la petite ville de la Côte Vermeille : Banyuls-sur-Mer. En 1905, Matisse et Derain faisaient exploser la couleur pure à travers leurs peintures fauves, juste en suivant le bord de mer, à Collioure. George-Daniel de Monfreid prenait livraison des toiles de Gauguin venant des Mers du Sud à son Château St.-Clément-de-Corneilla dans le Conflent. Il les partageait avec Gustave Fayet de l'Abbaye de Fontfroide près de Narbonne. Et quelques années plus tard, Frank Burty Haviland, Manolo et Déodat de Séverac, à l'occasion d'une visite au sculpteur Maillol, découvrirent Céret. Quand en 1910, ils furent rejoints par Picasso, puis par Braque et Juan Gris, Céret était en voie de devenir la Mecque du Cubisme.
