Frontiers in Chemical Sensors

With their similarity to the organs of the most advanced creatures that inhabit the Earth, sensors are regarded as being the "senses of electronics": arti?cial eyes and ears that are capable of seeing and hearing beyond the range of - man perception; electronic noses and tongues that can recognise odours and ?avours without a lifetime training; touch that is able not only to feel the texture and temperature of the materials but even to discern their chemical compo- tion. Among the world of chemical sensors, optical devices (sometimes termed "optodes", from the Greek "the optical way") have reached a prominent place in those areas where the features of light and of the light-matter interaction show their advantage: contactless or long-distance interrogation, detection sensitivity, analyte selectivity, absence of electrical interference or risks, and lack of analyte consumption, to name just a few. The introduction of optical ?bres and integrated optics has added more value to such sensing since now light can be con?ned and readily carried to dif?cult-to-reach locations, higher information density can be transported, indicator dyes can be immobilised at the distal end or the evanescent ?eld for unique chemical and biochemical sensing (including multiplexed and distributed measurements), optical s- sors can now be subject to mass production and novel sensing schemes have been established (interferometric, surface plasmon resonance, ?uorescence energy transfer, supramolecular recognition . . . ).

A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities
Silvia T. Acuna, Natalia Juristo, Ana Maria Moreno, Silvia T. Mon
- Springer
- 3 Juin 2006
- 9780387254890
A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities offers the most advanced approach to date, empirically validated at software development organizations. This handbook adds a valuable contribution to the much-needed literature on people-related aspects in software engineering. The primary focus is on the particular challenge of extending software process definitions to more explicitly address people-related considerations.
The capability concept is not present nor has it been considered in most software process models. The authors have developed a capabilities-oriented software process model, which has been formalized in UML and implemented as a tool. A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities guides readers through the incorporation of the individual's capabilities into the software process.
Structured to meet the needs of research scientists and graduate-level students in computer science and engineering, this book is also suitable for practitioners in industry. -
Corpus Linguistics in Language Teaching

Derived from the successful International Seminar on Corpus Linguistics, New Trends in Language Teaching and Translation Studies: In Honour of John Sinclair (Granada, September 2008), organised by the research groups ADELEX (Assessing and Developing Lexical Competence) and ECPC (European Comparable and Parallel Corpora), seven contributions from well-known scholars in the field focus their attention on recent advances made in Corpus Linguistics in Language Teaching. The first four chapters deal with more practical issues of applying corpora to language learning and teaching, examining particularly the integration of data-driven learning and different types of corpora including pedagogical, spoken multimedia and parallel. The last three chapters are concerned more with corpus-based research for language teaching arguing for more refined statistical methodology, comparing conversational features of the British National Corpus with a micro-corpus of movies and forwarding the case for research into corpus-based, meaning-oriented multimodal annotation, respectively. This volume is homage to John Sinclair's academic legacy and the groundbreaking work which continues to honour his name.

Legal Issues of International Law from a Gender Perspective
Ivana Krstic, Marco Evola, Maria Isabel Ribes Moreno
- Springer
- 16 Février 2023
- 9783031134593
This book offers a new perspective on international law, which was, for centuries, male-dominant and gender-blind. However, this gender blindness has led to many injustices, the failure to recognize certain rights, and to impunity for serious crimes. The book examines the development of gender perspectives in various branches of international law, while also discussing and explaining certain universal standards. However, particular attention is paid to the European human rights system.
Accordingly, the book provides detailed explanations of the EU's external policies in relation to sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Also, there is a special focus on the relevant jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights in relation to gender and sexual orientation, female reproduction, and sexuality. The authors explain not only the importance of an adequate legal framework for combating gender inequality but also the detrimental effects of deeply rooted gender stereotypes and prejudices. Subsequently, the development of particular branches is presented, such as a gender-sensitive approach to the prevention of war crimes, gender perspectives in refugee law, and the evolution of gender-sensitive environmental law. In addition, the problematic situation of discrimination in the workplace is addressed from various perspectives. Many discussions, especially among EU member states, are reserved for the issue of women's participation in managerial boards, while the growing awareness of gender equality in international trade agreements represents another interesting topic. Lastly, the book offers a historical perspective on the development of international law in the interwar period, with a particular focus on the situation in Yugoslavia.
The book critically reconsiders the dominant molds of legal knowledge and presents innovative gender-sensitive and gender-competent insights on a variety of issues in international law, in order to introduce readers to new research topics relevant to gender equality and to stimulate the development of an international legal and institutional framework for achieving greater gender equality in practice. The collection of essays presented here will be of interest to all those working in the field of international law, as well as students and academics looking to broaden and deepen their research on a range of issues in international law from gender perspectives. -
Music, Words, and Nationalism
Javier Moreno-Luzon, Maria Nagore-Ferrer
- Palgrave Macmillan
- 28 Décembre 2023
- 9783031416446
Music, Words and Nationalism: National Anthems and Songs in the Modern Era considers the concept of nationalism from 1780 to 2020 through anthems and national songs as symbolic and representative elements of the national identity of individuals, peoples, or collectivities. The volume shows that both the words and music of these works reveal a great deal about the defining features of a nation, its political and cultural history, and its self-perception. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach that provides a better understanding of the role of national anthems and songs in the expression of national identities and nationalistic goals. From this perspective, the relationship between hymns and political contexts, their own symbolic content (both literary and musical) and the role of specific hymns in the construction of national sentiments are surveyed.
