Glial Physiology and Pathophysiology provides a comprehensive, advanced text on the biology and pathology of glial cells.
Coverae includes:
the morphology and interrelationships between glial cells and neurones in different parts of the nervous systems the cellular physiology of the different kinds of glial cells the mechanisms of intra- and inter-cellular signalling in glial networks the mechanisms of glial-neuronal communications the role of glial cells in synaptic plasticity, neuronal survival and development of nervous system the cellular and molecular mechanisms of metabolic neuronal-glial interactions the role of glia in nervous system pathology, including pathology of glial cells and associated diseases - for example, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, Alexander disease and Parkinson's Neuroglia oversee the birth and development of neurones, the establishment of interneuronal connections (the 'connectome'), the maintenance and removal of these inter-neuronal connections, writing of the nervous system components, adult neurogenesis, the energetics of nervous tissue, metabolism of neurotransmitters, regulation of ion composition of the interstitial space and many, many more homeostatic functions. This book primes the reader towards the notion that nervous tissue is not divided into more important and less important cells. The nervous tissue functions because of the coherent and concerted action of many different cell types, each contributing to an ultimate output. This reaches its zenith in humans, with the creation of thoughts, underlying acquisition of knowledge, its analysis and synthesis, and contemplating the Universe and our place in it.
An up-to-date and fully referenced text on the most numerous cells in the human brain Detailed coverage of the morphology and interrelationships between glial cells and neurones in different parts of the nervous system Describes the role og glial cells in neuropathology Focus boxes highlight key points and summarise important facts Companion website with downloadable figures and slides -
Handbook of Erosion Modelling
Roy P. C. Morgan, Mark Nearing
- Wiley-Blackwell
- 9 Juin 2011
- 9781444348019
The movement of sediment and associated pollutants over the landscape and into water bodies is of increasing concern with respect to pollution control, prevention of muddy floods and environmental protection. In addition, the loss of soil on site has implications for declining agricultural productivity, loss of biodiversity and decreased amenity and landscape value. The fate of sediment and the conservation of soil are important issues for land managers and decision-makers. In developing appropriate policies and solutions, managers and researchers are making greater use of erosion models to characterise the processes of erosion and their interaction with the landscape. A study of erosion requires one to think in terms of microseconds to understand the mechanics of impact of a single raindrop on a soil surface, while landscapes form over periods of thousands of years. These processes operate on scales of millimetres for single raindrops to mega-metres for continents. Erosion modelling thus covers quite a lot of ground. This book introduces the conceptual and mathematical frameworks used to formulate models of soil erosion and uses case studies to show how models are applied to a variety of purposes at a range of spatial and temporal scales. The aim is to provide land managers and others with the tools required to select a model appropriate to the type and scale of erosion problem, to show what users can expect in terms of accuracy of model predictions and to provide an appreciation of both the advantages and limitations of models. Problems covered include those arising from agriculture, the construction industry, pollution and climatic change and range in scale from farms to small and large catchments. The book will also be useful to students and research scientists as an up-to-date review of the state-of-art of erosion modelling and, through a knowledge of how models are used in practice, in highlighting the gaps in knowledge that need to be filled in order to develop even better models.

Outsourcing is now a strategic choice for many companies and a continuing issue for managers and consultants. The transfer, negotiation and ongoing management of outsourced contracts all demand a great deal of people management. Yet, while the implications for those directly affected may be numerous and wide-ranging, very little has been written on how to sensitively and successfully manage the transfer of such individuals - along with the emotional needs of those left behind. This book considers The Human Side of Outsourcing, integrating theory and practice to offer state-of-the-art advice for those responsible for implementation in the field along with insightful analysis for researchers and students of work psychology. Examining problems and solutions from employee and employer perspectives, Stephanie J. Morgan provides an in-depth study of the psychological theory, management practice and level and type of support required to engage staff and improve outcomes. Real-world case studies illustrate all the key issues involved, along with their implications for HR, line management, organizational performance and employees themselves.

Proposed changes in practice legislation will allow podiatrists to prescribe a limited range of drugs and dressings. It is therefore now imperative that students and practitioners understand pharmacology. Not only the mechanisms of action of drugs, but also their potential side-effects and interactions with other drugs taken by the patient. This book will cover both basic and clinical pharmacology. The podiatrist's role in examination, assessment and diagnosis are considered.

Genetic Manipulation
J. M. Grange, K. R. Fox, N. L. Morgan
- Wiley-Blackwell
- 8 Juillet 2009
- 9781444314137
Genetic manipulation is no longer the province of the specialized researcher. It is finding widespread application in all fields of medicine and biology. Nevertheless, application of these relatively new techniques to new areas of research is often fraught with unexpected problems and difficulties. Based on the Society for Applied Bacteriology's Autumn 1989 Conference, this unique volume covers a wide and very up-to-date range of techniques used in genetic engineering. These include the isolation and analysis of DNA and RNA from cells and tissues, the selection and use of phage and plasmic vectors for cloning DNA, the cloning procedures, the production and screening of genomic libraries, the production and use of DNA probes, the polymerase chain reaction and the synthesis of 'designer' genes. This volume contains many examples of the applications of the above and other techniques for genetic manipulation, to subjects as diverse as plant pathology, forensic science, bacterial taxonomy, cardiac research, diagnostic microbiology, food hygiene and sewage treatment.
