'The stars incline, they do not determine.'
Do the stars have an influence on our lives? The author explains that when we are born we enter the zodiac and at that moment a kind of "photographic" snapshot is taken. But, as the author points out, "even more interesting is to see in astrology a system of symbols that allows us to understand the mechanisms of our psychic life in connection with the universe in whose image we were created".
'The constellations and planets are the hieroglyphs, the sacred letters which reveal, to those who know how to decipher them, how mankind and the world were created, how they evolve hand in hand and how their inner structure is identical. Every human being who becomes aware of his kinship with the universe begins to feel the need to cultivate his inner life in order to rediscover, within himself, that cosmic plenitude symbolized to perfection by the circle of the zodiac.'

True happiness is happiness without a cause.
This book is a key that has the power to take us to happiness, simply because its author has dedicated his entire life to understanding what it is, communicating it and teaching it in a lively and selfless way. Happy people will use it as a sounding board to seek to amplify their happiness. Those who are on the way will find markers, signposts and perhaps even a compass...
`Happiness is like a ball: you keep kicking it and running after it, and just as you are about to catch it, you kick it again... and start running after it all over again. Yes, it is the chase that stimulates you. It is in the quest, in the pursuit of a goal that you find happiness.
When you get something you want, of course, you are happy for a little while, but that satisfaction is soon followed by a feeling of emptiness, and you start to want something else. Your satisfaction never lasts. So what is the answer? The answer is to set out in pursuit of the farthest and most inaccessible goal: perfection, immensity and eternity. In pursuing this goal, you will find all the things you desire: knowledge, wealth, power and love. Yes, you will find these things without even asking for them.'

    A deep and luminous spirituality.
Commenting on certain parables from the New Testament, Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov reveals and sheds light on many subjects: reincarnation and our seven bodies ("Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect"), devote one's energies to a higher ideal, the necessary balance between matter and spirit ("On earth as in Heaven"), the role of the sun in our renewal, the importance of forgiveness, vigilance and psychic protection, etc.
'I know that it is not easy to conceive of God as inseparable from ourselves. But I can give you some exercises which will help. Disciples of an initiatic teaching know that within them dwells a cosmic Being of which they are only dimly aware and that they have to uproot their consciousness from the narrow confines of their own lower nature, so that it can melt into that boundless consciousness within them. This Being, this spark of divinity lives in them, and it is their task to seek until they find it.'

Learn to use the strength of the mind.
Many people still imagine that thoughts are forms of abstractions that have no real existence, at least outside of themselves. And yet thoughts are living entities, which propagate well beyond us and which, according to their powers, can influence not only beings but also things.
'Every one of our thoughts is pregnant with the power of the spirit which brought it into being, that power is constantly at work. Knowing this, each one of you has the possibility of becoming a benefactor of mankind; by projecting your thoughts into the farthest reaches of space, you can send out messages of light to help, comfort, enlighten and heal others. He who undertakes this work knowingly and deliberately, gradually penetrates into the mysterious arcana of divine creation.'

    Learning to feed consciously.
No matter what type of diet you are on, the most important thing is to know how to eat mindfully. The inner state in which we absorb food and the interest we take in our actions during meals are then reflected on us. Discover how to draw subtle energies from nutrition that will allow us to better accomplish all our activities afterwards.
'Millions of years before physicists developed atomic fission, humans performed it every day in their own bodies. And they continue to realize it, for nutrition is nothing more than a process of the disintegration of matter.
Eating is learning to break down matter and distribute the energy thus extracted in all organs: lungs, heart, brain ... Chewing food slowly and for a long time is a first step in this disintegration. The second stage is the work of the thought which, like an extremely penetrating ray, penetrates to the heart of matter from which it releases the most subtle energies in order to support the work of soul and spirit.'

Faith, an absolute certainty which results in a realization.
In this book, Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov clearly explains to us what faith is, how to nurture it and how to use it to develop ourselves. This is neither a belief nor an irrational feeling because it is based on the experiences that we have had during our past incarnations, and which are inscribed in our soul, as well as the knowledge of the great universal laws including that of causes and consequences.
'Faith goes hand in hand with long-term work. It is the fruit of efforts repeated day after day. Faith is something that lives, something that we must never separate from our everyday life. This is what we need to understand if we are to discover the hidden meaning of Jesus' words : if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, "Move from here to ther," and it will move.
We can move a mountain, but only if we do not rush at it, thinking to move it in one go. We can move a mountain, but only if we are ready to move it stone by stone. Every stone we move - that is, every time we succeed in something, however small, increases your faith ; we begin to feel that we are stronger and more stalwart, more in control of the situation. And then one day, if we look back at the progress we have made and find that half the work is already done, it is just possible that our faith will have become so strong that we can move the rest in one go.'

Its usefulness to awaken higher faculties.
The sexual force is a tremendous energy that goes far beyond what we can believe. In this book Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov explains to us concretely why and how to sublimate it: by directing this energy "up" so that it feeds the brain cells. This is not, of course, to bully ourselves out of deprivation, but to make us realize that there are other possibilities than letting them manifest only at "below." Because when this energy is well understood and well used we can use it to awaken higher faculties.
`Sexual force is an energy that can be compared to petroleum, the ignorant and clumsy are burned - this force burns its essence - while those who know how to use it, the Initiates, fly through space.'

Be actors in our daily life.
Daily life is a matter that we must work on to transform it because that is truly spiritual life. In this book, the author gives us no less than 115 methods and advice so as not to suffer what happens to us and to be actors in our daily life.
`Get into the habit of seeing the whole of your daily life, with all the things that you are obliged to do, the events that occur and the beings with whom you have to live or whom you meet in your work as a raw material, a matter that you have to transform. Don't be passive. Don't be content to accept whatever comes and submit to events: always add an element to that raw material that will animate, vivify and spiritualize it. This is what the spiritual life really is: the ability to introduce into every activity a yeast capable of catapulting it on to a higher plane. You will ask, "What about meditation and prayer? Where do they come into it?" That is just the point: it is by meditation and prayer that you pick up that subtler, purer element that enables you to give a new dimension to all your acts.'

    Matter and substance of creation.
Radiant light from the sun is a material phenomenon that physicists have studied very well. However, this sunlight is only the manifestation in the physical plane of the Cosmic Spirit by whom the universe was created. Light is actually a living, conscious, active and creative spirit that sustains physical as well as spiritual life.
'Have you ever realized that fire is visible only if it is accompanied by light? This is because light is the matter by means of which fire manifests itself. And if we transpose this image onto a higher plane we find that light is the substance which emanated from God, the primordial Fire, at the beginning of the world, when He said, `Let there be light'. It is this Light which St John, in the Prologue to his Gospel, calls the `Word': `In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... All things were made through Him...' Light is the Word uttered by the Creator and by means of this Light He created the world.'

Discovering the two great cosmic principles.
As we get used to observing and listening to nature, we come into contact with the soul of the different kingdoms and elements, such as that of water and fire. Water is the symbol of the raw material, the matrix of life, and this life came out of the water thanks to the principle of fire, symbol of the spirit, which set this matter in motion. So life on earth was also born from the action of fire on water. In this work these two elements are considered as the two principles of creation, like the feminine - the horizontal line - and the masculine - the vertical line: from these two assembled lines is born the symbol of the cross whose origin dates back to the oldest antiquity. Numerous analogies and explanations clarify the meanings and influences of these elements on the physical, psychological, psychic and spiritual levels.
'Our psychic life is shaped and moulded every day by the forces and influences we allow to enter and impregnate us. This is why it is essential to have a store of lovely pictures that we can conjure up in our minds often, pictures that are with us day and night, so that our thoughts may be constantly in touch with all that is most elevated, pure and sacred. And what is more beautiful, more poetic or more full of meaning than water and fire, and the different forms in which they appear to us? You can fill your whole life with these pictures, and absorb them until they impregnate every cell of your body.'

    Understanding the framework of reality.
Circle, triangle, pentagram, pyramid, cross, etc. Each geometric figure is like a structure from which the macrocosm (the universe) and the microcosm (the human being) are organized.
`From the earliest days of history, men have sought a language which would be both universal and synthetic, a language capable of expressing the richest and most complex realities while, at the same time, reducing them to the barest essentials. It is this research that led to the discovery of images and symbols. Images and symbols speak: they have their own language, but the absolute language of symbols is that of geometrical figures. Geometrical figures are, as it were, the framework or skeleton of reality but although they are reduced to the bare bones they are by no means dead, for they represent living realities in man and the universe. And this is why, in order to interpret them we have to breathe the life of the spirit into them: they will mean nothing to us if we are content to study them only as they occur outside ourselves.'

The sun, giver of life: physical, psychic and spiritual.
As early as 1937, the author had predicted that in the future, humanity would no longer use wood, coal or oil to produce energy, but that it would use only the sun's rays. In the future, he said, "it is thanks to the sun's energy that we will light up, heat ourselves, travel.... We will even feed ourselves with sunlight. "Now more and more people are recognizing the validity of this vision and are gradually becoming aware that the sun is a huge field to explore.
'Although we may know about heliocentricity from the point of view of astronomy, we are still far from having exhausted all its possibilities in the biological, psychological, cultural and spiritual spheres. The sun exists within each one of us and, if allowed to, can manifest its presence by awakening our consciousness to a global view of human problems.'

Learn to discern where our impulses come from.
Evolution has placed human beings on the frontiers of the animal world and the higher world, considered divine. This situation is thus at the origin of the ambiguity of our nature, double, at the same time lower and higher. Complementary as spirit and matter are, these two natures should help us develop harmoniously: by learning to dominate the first and by working to awaken the second.
'The majority of human beings belong to the group without light. They talk about rediscovering Nature and obeying the natural laws, but which nature are they talking about? There are two natures in man, one lower, one higher. People think they are obeying Nature when in fact they are doing something exactly opposite to their higher Nature, whereas others concentrate on their divine Nature and do everything in their power to subjugate and restrict the impulses of their human nature. Confusion reigns in people's minds and that is why it is so important to make them realize that a higher Nature exists in them, which expresses itself quite differently from the human nature they inherited from the animal kingdom.'

The urgency of reconnecting with nature.
Life is nothing other than uninterrupted exchanges between man and nature. By opening our heart to nature, by feeling that we are fully linked to it and that we are totally part of it, we can then access the "great book of nature". So we will begin to capture, grasp, information of a subtle nature and discover the true meaning of the "science of life". Because nature is the great cosmic reservoir with which we must urgently enter into contact.
'In Initiatic Science, to read means to be able to decipher the subtle and hidden side of objects and creatures, to interpret the symbols and signs placed everywhere by Cosmic Intelligence in the great book of the universe. To write means to leave one's imprint on this great book, to act upon stones, plants, animals and men through the magic force of one's spirit.'

    A concise and practical topography.
Beyond the five senses, adapted to the physical plane, there are other components that constitute us and which allow us to come into contact with the subtle, invisible planes, thus participating in the expansion of our consciousness.
`For thousands of years men have worked to multiply and amplify the sensations and perceptions entering their consciousness through their five senses, and it is this play on the keyboard of the senses that they call civilization and culture. Well, is this not rather meagre? However much we cultivate and refine our five senses they will always be severely limited in scope for they belong to the physical plane: they will never be capable of exploring any reality above or beyond the physical. Until human beings recognize that there are other areas that invite exploration, other dimensions to see, touch and breathe, they will never experience new, richer, more far-reaching or subtler sensations. Each of our organs is specialized: it has its own particular function to perform and it can convey only its own particular type of sensation. In order to experience other, new sensations, we must call into play those other, subtler organs and centres which we all possess.'

Silence, the highest region of our soul.
Of all languages, silence is that of perfection because it is the expression of our spirit that prompts us to review our life, to reflect on it and to learn from it. All this work of detachment, simplification and synthesis leads us to the true understanding of things, which is the essential goal of all spiritual practice.
`How wrong we are to think that silence denotes emptiness, nothingness, the absence of all activity or creation. In reality, there is more than one kind of silence: the silence of death and the silence of a higher degree of life. It is this silence, that of the higher degree of life, that concerns us here and that we must try to understand. This is not the silence of inertia; on the contrary, it is the stillness that surrounds a work of great intensity taking place in a climate of perfect harmony. Nor is it emptiness or absence; on the contrary, it is fullness, a fullness comparable to that experienced by two human beings who love each other very deeply and share something that cannot be expressed in words or gestures. Silence is a quality of the inner life.'

In this book learn how to apply the laws that govern human life and the destiny of each of us (laws of kickback, affinity, morality, recording, etc.) and how to use them for your personal development and those around you.
'Why is one born in a particular country and a particular family? Why is one healthy, rich, illustrious and powerful, or on the contrary poor, handicapped and miserable? Even those who think they are entirely free must put up with their fate because of their ignorance of the laws which govern the invisible world. Immune yourself against suffering.
One of the most important faculties is to rejoice, not to possess. Joy is in our higher nature and pain is in our lower nature. So if we want to taste real, eternal joy, we must seek to live in soul and in spirit. They alone have the power to project us into infinite space for the higher nature lives and resides in eternal light and eternal bliss.
`True joy is not the result of anything visible or tangible. It is joy without a reason, given to us simply by our sense of existing as a soul and spirit. So instead of waiting to possess something or someone in order to feel joy, you must do the opposite: rejoice in the existence of people and things, for the joy you receive from them will give you the sense that they belong to you. Whatever gives you joy belongs to you, while what belongs to you doesn't necessarily give you much joy. You truly possess everything that gives you joy, and far more so than if you owned it.'

Two streams from the same Source.
We are continually subject to the duality of good and evil, for more often than not nothing is quite right or quite wrong, and even the best things can come with downsides. To this question, this book does not only provide clear and precise explanations but above all practical methods to strengthen oneself spiritually, learn to manage this duality and triumph over the trials of life.
'The solution of the question of evil lies in knowing the methods of how to work with it and to use its power. What-ever its origin, evil is an inner and outer reality which con-fronts us daily and which we have to learn to deal with. To attack it head-on is not only useless but dangerous: the odds are too heavily against us. So we have to learn the methods to use in order to gain the upper hand and transform evil into good.'

A symbol that dominates all creation.
The symbol of the Libra is universal and used, among other things, to represent justice. But above all, it is a powerful subject for meditation and reflection, for it is by balancing this Libra within us that we will achieve a greater understanding of ourselves, of life and of the whole of creation: harmonizing the positive and the negative, the masculine and the feminine, rigor and mercy, attraction and repulsion, water and fire?
'On September 23rd, the Sun enters the sign of Libra (Scales or Balance), and this is the autumn equinox. After the ascending phase, from Aries to Virgo, comes the descending phase, from Libra to Pisces. Libra is the seventh sign on the zodiacal belt. Why, you may wonder, are there scales in the heavens, and what do these scales teach us? This is the only sign of the zodiac that does not represent a living being, human or animal. It is an inanimate object, and not just any object, but an instrument for weighing things. It is as though its two pans were there to maintain the balance between the powers of darkness and light, of life and death. Libra, the Scales of the zodiac, is a reflection of the cosmic scales, the equilibrium between the two opposite and complementary principles, thanks to which the universe came into being and continues to exist. The symbol of the scales, which we find also in the sephirotic Tree of Life, dominates the whole of creation.'

The real magic is in a well understood life.
Beyond the images of grimoires and more or less obscure formulas, true magic is a science. That of vigilant observation in all our activities because our actions, feelings, thoughts or words necessarily produce effects, positive or negative. Also this real magic consists in generating only beneficial effects for us as for the others.
'True magic, divine magic, consists in putting all one's powers, all one's knowledge, at the service of the Kingdom of God on earth.Very few magicians attain this higher level, the level at which they are totally free of any personal interest even in magical practices themselves and have outgrown all desire to command the spirits for the satisfaction of their own ambitions; the level at which they have only one desire: that of working in the light and for the light. Those who reach this level are true theurgists: all that they do is utterly disinterested; they are true benefactors of mankind.'

Exercise the power of the mind over matter.
Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov has often said that by studying the Gospels, he travelled through the spiritual regions that also resided in him, thus gaining access to a kind of cosmic "library", the "great book of Nature". Here again, commenting on certain parables, he enlightens us on the many tools at our disposal to transform us through processes of spiritual alchemy.
'The Gospels can be understood and interpreted in the light of alchemical science. On the face of it, they are simply giving an account of the life of one man, Jesus, born two thousand years ago in Palestine, but while they recount the different stages of his life, from birth to death and resurrection, they are in fact also describing alchemical processes.
In spite of being an object of condemnation by the clergy, since the Middle Ages alchemy has profundly permeated Christian mysticism and esotericism. And if you study the sculptures both on the outside and inside of cathedrals such as the Notre-Dame in Paris or the Notre-Dame in Chartres, you will discover that the builders of these cathedrals possessed alchemical knowledge, to which architecture and sculpture bear ample witness.'

Beyond the visible, always look for the invisible.
The essential is always invisible and life is a perfect example of this because we do not see it, only its manifestations. Accessing the invisible world to broaden our understanding is perfectly legitimate and this book is a very precious guide so that we avoid the mistakes, illusions or even certain dangers that may arise. Thus, through rigorous work we will be able to access luminous revelations of great purity.
`You must not imagine that, just because some people have mediumistic capacities, this necessarily gives them access to every region of the invisible world; on the contrary, they will see only what corresponds to their own level of consciousness, their own thoughts and desires. Each individual receives the degree of clairvoyance that matches his level of evolution; those who are still mired in the lower regions of the astral plane are bound to suffer because they will encounter only the entities of that plane. If you want to be in communication with heavenly entities, with divine splendour, you must purify yourself, broaden the scope of your consciousness and work for the highest ideal: the brotherhood of all men, the Kingdom of God. When you do this, your emanations become purer, your vibrations subtler, and not only will the spirits of light allow you to reach them, but they themselves will come to you, for they will find nourishment in you.'

  • `The whole world gives priority to the question of food: everyone tries to deal with it before anything else; they work for food and even fight for it. But this attitude with regard to food is still only an impulse, an instinctive tendency, which has not entered the realm of enlightened consciousness. Only initiatic Science teaches us that food prepared in the divine laboratories with incredible wisdom contains magical elements capable of preserving or restoring physical and psychic health. For that to happen, we have to know in what conditions these elements can be captured and that the most effective method for doing so is thought. Yes, human thought is capable of drawing subtle, luminous particles from the food, which take part in the construction of our entire being, and in this way we are gradually transformed.
`When you understand this, nutrition will become a source of benefit and wonder for you, because beyond the simple fact of eating to keep yourself alive will be added greater meaning and greater knowledge; there will be other work to do, other goals to achieve. Superficially, you will eat like everybody else and the whole world will eat like you, but in fact there will be a difference as great as that between earth and heaven.'
