• Dans la Rome de Néron, ce roman - l'un des tous premiers, si ce n'est le premier de l'histoire de la littérature - met en scène les aventures de deux jeunes hommes, Encolpe et Ascylte, ainsi que du jeune amant du premier, l'adolescent Giton. Encolpe est frappé d'impuissance par le dieu Priape. Son ami et rival Ascylte décide de profiter de la circonstance pour conquérir Giton. S'ensuit alors toute un enchaînement de situations. Menées tambour battant, ces aventures offrent une peinture des caractères et des moeurs de manière vivante voire parodique et même satirique que la traduction de Louis de Langle restitue à la perfection. Pétrone, en latin Petronius Arbiter, fut un conseiller à la cour de l'empereur romain Néron. La tradition littéraire fait de lui l'auteur du Satyricon. Il se donne la mort par suicide en 66 à Cumes.

    Il y a des livres qui surgissent du néant pour créer une postérité littéraire sans précédent. Le Satiricon fait partie de ceux-là : on ne sait rien de vraiment sérieux sur son auteur, à part quelques suppositions qui ont varié avec le temps et les professeurs d'universités. Le texte, lui aussi, est balafré de part en part, pourri de lacunes que les siècles eux n'ont pas réussi à combler.
    Restent des extraits. Dont l'ensemble forment une oeuvre surprenante de modernité. Au détour d'une page, on tombe nez à nez avec un loup-garou saisi d'un délire urinatoire. Ou alors, on se prend à écouter des parodies de déclamationes que chérissaient tant les Romains de l'Empire... Sans parler de sexe, qui fit la réputation sulfureuse de Pétrone.
    Ce n'est pas pour rien que Pascal Quignard en fait l'origine du roman, sous le signe de la satire, du mélange des genres, pour le dire à la mode d'aujourd'hui, forgeant une généalogie vertueuse du vice.
    La traduction de Héguin de Guerle a les charmes grivois de la belle infidèle. A déguster avec parcimonie.
